History of Seaside

Seaside, a city adjacent to the City of Monterey, originated with the establishment of the Hotel Del Monte. Its development into a subdivision was initially an extension of the resort community, targeting tourists. Dr. John Roberts, who moved from New York to California in 1887, is credited as the founder of Seaside. He purchased 160 acres of land and subdivided it into 1,000 lots for vacation properties, also making it his home. Dr. Roberts played a pivotal role in the establishment of Fort Ord in Seaside by lobbying President Theodore Roosevelt in 1910. Fort Ord, a U.S. Army base, was operational until 1994 and significantly contributed to the city’s diversity and reputation as a model of political inclusion, especially during the civil rights era.
