Vermont Street has become famous for hosting one of San Francisco’s quirkiest traditions—the Bring Your Own Big Wheel (BYOBW) race which happens annually on Easter Sunday. Each year, Vermont Street transforms into a racetrack where hundreds of adults reconnect with their inner child. The day typically features a structured schedule with younger participants racing earlier in the afternoon, followed by the main adult competition.
The tradition began modestly in 2000 when a creative San Franciscan decided to ride a children’s plastic tricycle down Lombard Street on Easter Sunday. What started as a solo adventure gradually attracted more participants each year. By 2008, the growing popularity of the event led to its relocation from Lombard Street to the more challenging curves of Vermont Street in Potrero Hill.

The brave Open Homie who shred

Open Homies Devin and Jeff meet up at the race
Devin B., one of our fantastic Visual Artists, was brave enough to participate in the race this year, tearing down the slope on his trike with bunny ears and a GoPro adorning his helmet! We loved hearing about Devin’s firsthand experience of navigating the twists and turns while surrounded by enthusiastic racers and cheering spectators.
Despite the inevitable wipeouts and crashes, the event maintains a remarkable safety record. Most participants escape with nothing more serious than minor scrapes and bruises—along with memories that last a lifetime.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of volunteers handles the considerable logistics. They secure necessary permits, arrange safety measures like hay bales along the course, and manage fundraising to cover the substantial costs of organizing the event. The entire operation runs on donations and community spirit.
The BYOBW race perfectly represents San Francisco’s unique culture—combining creativity, a touch of rebelliousness, and a community that values play regardless of age. While tourists snap photos on Lombard Street, locals know that Vermont Street offers not only the most technically challenging curves but also hosts the most authentic fun in the city.
BYOBW = Why we love SF!

Kids at the starting line wait for the race to begin
While Lombard Street draws tourists, Vermont Street embodies San Francisco’s authentic spirit—quirky and community-driven. As plastic wheels skid down its curves, this street showcases what makes the city special: unexpected joy on less-traveled paths. Whether racing or cheering, visitors experience San Francisco’s playful essence on this truly crooked street.
Just bring a helmet, a sense of adventure, and perhaps your own Big Wheel; this is one San Francisco experience that’s best enjoyed as a participant rather than a spectator – just ask Devin!
