First impressions happen fast — sometimes in a single photo. That’s why the way you show up in your headshots can make all the difference. After helping 6,000 clients market over $60 billion in real estate, we’ve seen what works (and what doesn’t). Here are our top tips for looking great on camera and perfectly conveying your brand.

Tip: Print this list and keep it handy for your next on-camera appearance!

Bring a few options

Don’t rely on a single outfit. Bring two or three well-chosen options so your photographer can help select what works best with the backdrop and lighting. Sometimes a shirt that looks great in the mirror falls flat in photos, so having backups ensures you get the strongest result.

Fit is everything

Clothing that’s too tight can look uncomfortable, and clothing that’s too loose can look sloppy. Well-fitted pieces make you appear confident and put together. Think tailored, not restrictive. If needed, have a blazer, shirt, or dress adjusted so it flatters your shape and lets you move naturally.

Choose the right colors

When it comes to headshots, solid colors are your best friend. Busy patterns can be distracting, and extremely bright neons not only pull attention away from your face but can also make your photos feel dated. Instead, go for timeless shades that highlight your features.

Jewel tones—like plum, burgundy, navy, or emerald—are flattering on most skin tones and convey a refined, professional appearance. Neutrals such as gray, black, or ivory can also look strong, especially when contrasted against a simple background. A dark top against a light backdrop creates both contrast and sophistication.

Providing enough contrast to your skin tone adds interest and helps you stand out.

Clothing that is too similar to skin color can wash you out.

Avoid distracting patterns

Small, checkered patterns, tight stripes, and bold prints can overwhelm the photo and compete with your expression. If you love texture, go for subtle fabrics like tweed or knits in solid tones—they add visual interest without stealing the spotlight.

Solid colors minimize distractions, making for a clean and polished appearance.

Busy patterns draw attention away from the subject and can be very distracting to the viewer.

Dress for your vibe

Your headshot should reflect how you actually show up for your clients. If you never wear a tuxedo or a formal suit to appointments, there’s no need to force that look in your photos. Instead, choose clothing that feels authentic to your day-to-day style—whether that’s a sharp blazer, a polished dress, or something more relaxed. The bottom line: wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Pay attention to the details

  • Accessories: Minimal is best. A simple necklace, tie, or pair of earrings can add polish, but avoid oversized or flashy items that might compete with your face.
  • Wrinkled Clothes: Even a great outfit can look unkempt if it’s wrinkled. Steam or iron outfits ahead of time, and transport them on hangers.
  • Hands & Nails: If there’s a chance your hands will show—such as with a folded-arm pose—keep nails neat and clean, and ensure any nail polish is fresh and chip-free.

Final thoughts

Your headshot should look like you on your best day. Clients want to recognize the same person in your photos that they’ll meet at a showing or an open house. That means choosing an outfit that feels authentic, polished, and true to your personal style—not something that feels forced. When you’re comfortable and confident, it shows, and that’s what makes a headshot memorable and effective.
