Why Changing the Music in Your Video Isn’t an Instant Edit

Why Changing the Music in Your Video Isn’t an Instant Edit

TL;DR:    Add Open Home Photography as a preferred source

Changing the song in a finished video isn’t as simple as replacing one audio file with another. Our editors build each video around the pacing, rhythm, structure, and key moments of its music. Changing the song often means retiming shots, cuts, transitions, and other moments throughout the video.

The easiest way to avoid a music revision? Choose your preferred track from the Open Homes Music Library before your video is edited — ideally, before it’s even shot.

Key takeaways

  • Your video is edited to the music–not the other way around. The song helps determine pacing, cuts, transitions, and important visual moments.
  • Changing the song usually means re-editing the video. Dropping a new track into an existing edit can make previously intentional moments feel out of sync.
  • One round of video revisions is included with your order. If you’re requesting a song change, include any other edits at the same time whenever possible.
  • Allow one business day for video revisions. The revision may be completed sooner, but music changes are one of the most time-consuming edits.
  • Choosing your music before editing begins is the best way to avoid delays. Browse our Music Library and use the “favorite” feature to save your top choices.

The video is built around the music–not the other way around

When our editors build a video, the music helps shape the entire edit.

We consider the song’s tempo, energy, structure, and emotional arc when deciding how long shots should last and where important moments should happen.

For example, an editor might:

  • Time the reveal of a dramatic view to a musical peak.
  • Use a quieter section for slower, more detailed shots.
  • Change scenes on a beat or musical phrase.
  • Build momentum as the song becomes more energetic.
  • Let a final exterior or sunset shot land naturally with the ending of the track.

These choices help the finished video feel intentional. The music isn’t simply playing behind the footage—it helps determine how the footage is arranged and presented.

Changing the song changes the edit

Every song has its own tempo, rhythm, structure, and progression. If we simply place a different track underneath a finished video, the relationship between the visuals and music can feel disjointed or awkward.

Cuts that once felt natural may suddenly feel too fast or too slow. Transitions can land at awkward moments. A major property reveal may happen during the wrong part of the song. Even the beginning and ending may no longer line up properly.

Our editors may need to retime shots, move cuts, adjust transitions, rearrange portions of the sequence, or rethink moments that were designed specifically around the original track.

More than one version needs to be updated

A single Video Tour results in multiple deliverables, including Branded and Unbranded versions, a Teaser, and a Vertical Video.

Although the Branded and Unbranded videos are delivered as two separate files, they only require one re-edit because the underlying video is the same. The Teaser and Vertical Video each require their own re-edit, which means a single music change can require updates to at least three separate video edits.

Once those edits are complete, the revised files must be rendered again. Our Quality Control team then reviews them to make sure the new track works properly with the visuals and that the revision hasn’t introduced any pacing, timing, or audio issues.

The easiest way to avoid a music revision? Choose your song ahead of time

If you already have a particular genre or song in mind, the best time to tell us is before your video is edited.

Open Homes has a dedicated Music Library inside Atrium (your Agent Dashboard) where you can browse professionally licensed tracks and save your favorites.

Choosing your song ahead of time allows our editor to build the video around that track from the beginning—and is the easiest way to avoid waiting for a music revision afterward.

If you decide to change the song after receiving your video, we strongly recommend choosing the replacement directly from our Music Library. That gives our team clear direction and can reduce additional back-and-forth.

Not sure which song you want? Even giving us a genre, mood, or general direction—such as upbeat, relaxed, cinematic, or modern—is extremely helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t you just replace the song in my video with a different song?

Technically, we could—but it would be a little like changing the music for a choreographed dance without changing the choreography. The movements would no longer land where they were designed to.

In the same way, replacing the audio without adjusting the video can make shots, cuts, and transitions feel out of sync. That’s why our editor reviews the full video and makes adjustments where needed.

How long does a music change take?

Our standard turnaround for video revisions is one business day. The revision may be completed sooner than that, but song changes usually require more editing than simpler requests, such as removing a clip or rearranging part of the sequence.

Are video edits included with my order?

Yes. One round of video revisions is included with your order. If you have several changes you’d like to make, sending them together whenever possible helps us address everything within the same revision round.

Are photo edits included with my order?

Yes. Your order includes five complimentary basic photo edits. If you request more than five basic edits, or if your request requires more advanced editing, an additional fee will apply.

Can I choose the music for my video?

Absolutely! We encourage you to browse our Music Library, which includes professionally licensed tracks. Once you find one you like, let us know your selection and we’ll take care of the rest.

When should I choose my music?

Ideally, before your video is shot. If you already know what you want, choosing a song early gives our editor the opportunity to build the video around that track from the start.

Can I use any song I want?

Usually, no. Unless you or your client own the appropriate licensing rights, we’re unable to use commercially released or otherwise unlicensed music.

Every track in the Open Homes Music Library is already licensed for use in our videos.

What if I don’t know what song to choose?

That’s okay. Our editors can select a track that works with the style and pacing of your video.

If you have a general preference—upbeat, relaxed, cinematic, modern, or something else—letting us know in advance can help guide the selection.

How do I share my finished video on Instagram?

Every Open Homes Video Tour includes a short vertical social video created from the horizontal video at no additional cost. We also offer social-first video options and a Social Video Edit Add-On for agents who want content created specifically for vertical platforms.

These videos can be easily shared as Instagram Reels.
