Five Ways to Make a Small Space Feel Bigger

Five Ways to Make a Small Space Feel Bigger

If you live in a small home, sometimes things can feel a bit cramped. Whether you’re staging a home to sell, downsizing, or just need a makeover we have a few key tips to make your space feel bigger.

CHOOSE APPROPRIATELY SIZED FURNITURE

Make sure you have furniture that is the right size for the room. For example, a couch that goes from wall to wall can make the room feel cramped. Opt for a loveseat or two comfortable chairs to make the space feel more open.

Additionally, when you are on the hunt for furniture look for airy pieces, rather than “heavy” ones; think thin, long lines. A tell-tale sign of an airy piece would be that you can see under it. A heavy piece would be a couch with a slipcover that hits the floor. That’s a no go.

CHOOSE LIGHT PAINT COLORS

Using lighter paint shades, in general, helps bring more light to a room. Dark shades can make it feel like the walls are caving in on you.

If you have to have color, try keeping the upper six inches of the wall as well as the ceiling white. This will give the illusion of higher ceilings and a more open feel. This is a good example, not sure what the source is but if you find it we can just give credit.

MAKE ROOM FOR STORAGE

In a small space, it only takes a few things out of place to make things look messy very quickly.

Using storage baskets, built-ins and dual function furniture (think couches, chairs and coffee tables with added storage compartments) are great ways to keep the clutter at bay.

MAKE SURE TO HANG CURTAINS CORRECTLY

If you have low ceilings, hang the curtain rod about 3 inches below the ceiling instead of at the top of the window. This will bring your eye up, making the room feel taller and more spacious.

LESS IS MORE

If you have done all of the above and it still feels cramped, try paring down what you have in the room.

If we use a living room for an example and you have a couch, chair, coffee table, and a media cabinet, see if you can’t combine a few pieces. Instead of a coffee table, maybe get a small side table. Alternatively, you could get rid of the chair and opt for a soft coffee table that can be used for extra seating when needed.

Finding the arrangement that works is best done by trial and error to see what works for you and the room’s functionality but in the end, the fewer pieces you have in a room, the bigger it will feel.
